India Mental Health Market 2026: How States Like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi NCR Are Transforming Mental Healthcare Access

The India mental health market is estimated at around USD 20.8 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach approximately USD 27.4 billion by 2034, expanding at a CAGR of about 3.1%. Digital mental healthcare and preventive wellness services are expected to grow considerably faster than the overall market.

India’s Mental Health Burden is Larger Than Most People Realize

Mental illness is no longer a niche healthcare concern.

According to the Government of India and NIMHANS, 10.6% of Indian adults currently live with a diagnosable mental disorder, while the lifetime prevalence reaches 13.7%. Nearly 15% of India’s adult population requires active mental health intervention, making mental healthcare one of the country’s largest unmet medical needs.

Experts estimate that over 150 million Indians require mental healthcare services, but fewer than 30 million receive appropriate treatment, highlighting one of the world’s largest treatment gaps.

Urban India continues to report a higher burden of mental illness than rural areas, with prevalence reaching 13.5% in cities compared to 6.9% in rural regions, driven by workplace stress, lifestyle changes, financial pressures, and social isolation.

Government Initiatives Are Reshaping Mental Healthcare

Mental health has become a national healthcare priority.

During 2025-26, the Government of India launched National Mental Health Survey-2 (NMHS-2), the country’s largest-ever mental health survey. Unlike the first survey conducted in 2015-16 across 12 states, the new study covers all 28 states and 8 Union Territories, including adolescents for the first time.

More than 250,000 interviews have already been completed, providing policymakers with updated national mental health data after nearly a decade.

2026 Focus: Mental Health Moves Into Mainstream Healthcare

India’s Economic Survey 2025-26 highlighted rising digital addiction, excessive screen exposure, and growing psychological distress among children, adolescents, and working professionals.

The 2026 Union Budget also strengthened the country’s mental healthcare infrastructure, including plans to expand specialized mental health institutions and improve nationwide access to psychiatric care.

Another alarming indicator comes from national suicide statistics.

According to the State of India’s Environment 2026, mental illness accounted for 14,305 illness-related suicides in 2024, representing nearly 47% of all illness-related suicides in the country.
