Cold plasma technology is gaining attention far beyond research laboratories, with healthcare, food processing and advanced manufacturing increasingly exploring what it can do. The global industry was valued at around USD 3.34 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 3.82 billion in 2026. By 2034, it could grow to about USD 11.14 billion, reflecting an annual growth rate of 14.35%.
What I find particularly interesting is that cold plasma can deliver powerful treatment and sterilization effects without relying on high temperatures. That makes it useful for applications where conventional heat-based methods are not suitable. Wound care, dermatology, surface disinfection, medical device treatment and food safety are among the areas seeing growing interest.
Healthcare is currently one of the strongest areas of adoption. Wound care and dermatology accounted for roughly 46% of activity in 2025, as hospitals and specialized clinics look for non-invasive ways to support wound healing and infection control. Cold plasma can help reduce microbial contamination while supporting tissue repair, which gives it an interesting role in advanced wound management.
I also see sterilization becoming an increasingly important application. Hospitals continue to deal with healthcare-associated infections, while food and industrial facilities face growing pressure to use safer and more sustainable processing methods. Cold plasma offers a chemical-free approach that can treat surfaces without leaving conventional chemical residues.
Technology development is another area worth watching. Portable plasma devices, atmospheric-pressure plasma jets, dielectric barrier discharge systems and plasma-activated liquids are making the technology more flexible. The combination of plasma with AI and IoT could take this further by enabling real-time monitoring, automated control and predictive maintenance.
Europe currently leads, accounting for about 36% of global revenue in 2025. However, Asia Pacific appears to have stronger growth potential, supported by expanding healthcare infrastructure, electronics manufacturing and investments in advanced technologies. China and India, in particular, are becoming important areas for research, manufacturing and commercial adoption.
The biggest challenge remains cost. Specialized equipment, installation and maintenance can make adoption difficult, especially for smaller organizations. Standardization and regulatory approval are also important before wider clinical use can happen.
For me, the most interesting part of cold plasma is its versatility. What began largely as a research-driven technology is gradually finding practical applications across healthcare and industry. If costs come down and adoption becomes easier, cold plasma could become a much more familiar technology in everyday applications.
