US Life Sciences Enter a New Phase of Growth

The US life sciences industry is entering a period of rapid change, driven by advances in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, genomics and personalized medicine. According to Payal Rabde, a life sciences researcher specializing in biotechnology, genetic engineering, biopharmaceutical research, cell and gene therapy, and clinical trials, the industry was valued at around USD 31.58 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 35.39 billion in 2026. By 2035, it could approach USD 98.52 billion, growing at an annual rate of 12.05%.

What stands out to me is how closely technology and healthcare are now connected. AI is being used to accelerate drug discovery, analyze complex biological data and improve clinical trials. At the same time, technologies such as CRISPR, next-generation sequencing and advanced biomanufacturing are opening new possibilities for developing more targeted treatments.

Biopharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals remain the largest segment, accounting for about 45% of the industry in 2025. However, I think contract research and manufacturing organizations are worth watching closely. As drug development becomes more complex, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are increasingly relying on specialized partners for clinical research, testing, manufacturing and analytics.

Government support is also playing an important role. Continued funding for biomedical research through the NIH and initiatives such as ARPA-H are helping move promising ideas from laboratories toward real-world applications. Private investment is adding further momentum, particularly in precision medicine, genomics and AI-driven biotechnology.

Another trend I find important is sustainability. Laboratories consume significant amounts of energy and generate considerable packaging, chemical and other waste. Companies and researchers are increasingly looking for ways to reduce waste, improve laboratory efficiency and extend equipment life.

The US also benefits from a strong ecosystem of pharmaceutical companies, biotech startups, universities, research institutions and specialized service providers. High clinical research activity and continued investment in biologics, diagnostics, gene therapies and advanced laboratory technologies are creating further opportunities.

There are still challenges, particularly around supply chains, costs, regulation and the complexity of bringing new treatments through clinical development. But the direction is clear to me. The next decade will be shaped by how effectively science, data and technology come together to improve patient care.

For me, that combination is what makes US life sciences one of the most interesting areas to watch through 2035.
