Thermostable Vaccines Set to Transform Global Immunization Access

Thermostable vaccines are emerging as an important advancement in vaccine technology, helping address one of the biggest challenges in global immunization: maintaining reliable cold-chain storage. The sector was valued at approximately USD 9.27 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 9.96 billion in 2026. By 2035, it is projected to reach around USD 19.05 billion, growing at a CAGR of 7.47% between 2026 and 2035.

Unlike conventional vaccines that often require continuous refrigeration, thermostable formulations are designed to retain their effectiveness under wider temperature conditions. This can make vaccine transportation and storage easier, particularly in remote regions where electricity, refrigeration, and transportation infrastructure may be limited.

Reducing Cold-Chain Challenges

The biggest advantage of thermostable vaccines is their potential to reduce dependence on cold-chain systems. Maintaining refrigerated storage throughout transportation can increase costs and create logistical difficulties, especially during emergencies or large-scale immunization campaigns.

By improving temperature stability, these vaccines could help healthcare workers reach rural and underserved communities more efficiently. Greater accessibility can support higher vaccination coverage and strengthen preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks.

Research and Innovation Accelerate

Scientists are developing thermostable formulations for diseases including tuberculosis, measles, polio, influenza, and COVID-19. In March 2023, the Access to Advanced Health Institute (AAHI) reported Phase I clinical trial findings for a freeze-dried tuberculosis vaccine candidate designed to avoid refrigeration.

Innovation has continued into 2025. Vaxxas announced a USD 4.8 million CEPI-supported program to develop heat-stable, dried-formulation mRNA vaccines. The company is working with SK Bioscience toward further development and clinical evaluation.

The COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted the importance of temperature-stable vaccine technologies. Difficulties associated with transportation, storage, and unequal access encouraged researchers to explore formulations that could remain effective under less demanding conditions.

Regional Developments

North America continues to benefit from advanced healthcare infrastructure, strong research capabilities, and significant investment in vaccine development. Europe is also progressing through supportive policies, research collaborations, and clinical development programs.

Asia Pacific presents particularly strong potential because many countries face challenging transportation conditions and limited cold-chain infrastructure in remote areas. Large populations in countries such as India, China, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian nations further increase the importance of easier vaccine distribution.

In April 2025, UK-based Stablepharma began the world’s first clinical trial evaluating its thermostable tetanus-diphtheria vaccine candidate, SPVX02, at University Hospital Southampton.

Looking Ahead

Thermostable vaccine technology could make immunization programs more flexible, affordable, and accessible. Continued advances in formulation science, mRNA technology, stabilization techniques, and regulatory development are expected to support wider adoption and help bring vaccines to communities where conventional cold-chain requirements remain a major barrier.
